Character Information
Name: Suzaku Kururugi
Canon: Code Geass
Canon Point: Season 1, episode 18. Right before the Geass of "Live" is cast on him.
Age: 17
History: Here
Personality: Simply put, Suzaku is a hero with a martyr complex, who was born into the wrong genre of anime by accident. His high moral viewpoint and incredible physical skills would make him an ace pilot and hero of the people if he were in a different, kinder world. But in his own one he is a kin killer, a traitor and a murderer.
At the age of ten Suzaku killed his own father (the prime minister of Japan) because he believed it would stop the war and the fighting that was destroying Japan. This led to the unconditional surrender of Japan and their complete subjugation under Britannian rule. It was covered up by the surviving officials of Japan, the official story was that Genbu Kururugi committed suicide. Suzaku has been living with the guilt of this act for seven years and at this canon point this is still an act that defines him.
Because of his actions he believes strongly that the end does not justify the means. He refuses to join with Zero both times he is asked because of this belief. He believes that the way to end Britannia's rule is to work from within them and change them. At the age of fourteen Suzaku joined the Britannian army as an honoury Britannian. He hopes to one day change Britannia for the better and free Area 11 (Japan).
Suzaku is an idealist though this is slowly changing. Early on he is arrested for the murder of Prince Clovis (he is innocent), Lloyd warns him that even if his case went to trial he would not have a single ally in his fight, Suzaku argues that the courts were meant to bring the truth to light and when Lloyd tells him that they more often obscure the truth in darkness Suzaku claims that if that was the way the world worked then he did not regret leaving it. As he goes through more battles and witnesses more atrocities he comes to be more realistic, he would still wish for a better world but he does not expect it from those around him.
Suzaku is content when sacrificing himself for others, be that physically in battle or emotionally putting their needs and rights over his. Within the first few moments of meeting Suzaku we see him use his gas mask to protect Lelouch from poison gas and then refuse to shoot Lelouch when ordered and be shot himself.
He believes that civilians and innocents should not be harmed. He will go as far as to disobey orders in order to save civilians even when he knows he will be punished. During a psychological exam he is told that he has some sort of hero issues probably stemming from his childhood that makes him constantly try to save civilians (in the Britannian army this is considered a problem). He does however have no problems with being ordered to lay his life down and will obey calmly.
Because Suzaku believes he deserves to die, to be punished. He would never go as far to take his own life but he has no qualms at throwing himself into danger and fighting on past what is sane and reasonable. This death wish is what leads Lelouch to cast a "Live" Geass on him- he is ordered to hold Zero and die with him. This is the point he is taken from for the purposes of this app. It is clear he is frightened at that moment though he takes the order stoically and argues that it is something he is choosing to do. Notably this comes at a point where he has just been made Euphemia's knight and for the first time seems to be getting somewhere in his bid to change Britannia. Despite, or perhaps because of this he is unwilling to challenge his orders and claims that dying is "Better than breaking the rules."
Living in the world that he does his strong moral standpoint slips every time it comes into conflict with his other loyalties. His loyalty to Japan and its people, his loyalty to the Britannian Army who he swore to serve and his loyalties to those he cares about and wishes to protect.
He wishes to do no harm to civilians and yet is a soldier of a nation that guns down families in their homes. He wishes to bring peace and yet he is the "white reaper"- named for the white Knightmare frame he pilots. At one point Cornelia orders him to execute his old mentor Toudoh who is close to a second father figure. Though he is clearly horrified beyond imagination at the thought there is nothing to suggest that he would have refused if the execution had not been interrupted.
Because Suzaku is a soldier through and through. At this canon point this forms a lot of his behaviour. He falls into formality whenever he is unsure of a situation. He is good at taking orders, takes his job as a soldier and more recently a knight very seriously and is proud of his skills in combat and in Knightmare piloting, even if the latter was kept a secret. He takes failure very hard and blames himself for the people he fails to save.
Suzaku enjoys Knightmare piloting, he was good at it in simulations in classes though he understands that a 'former eleven' can never be a knight. When Lloyd offers him the chance to be a pilot of an experimental Knightmare frame with a high chance of explosion and no ejection seat Suzaku does not hesitate to say yes.
The fact Suzaku is an honoury Britannian is also a big part of his personality at this point in canon. Though Suzaku would like to change the way Britannia is he does not fight against peoples opinions of him. He won't allow physical violence but he does not challenge insults. He keeps his face blank when insulted by his superiors in the army, he says nothing of the abuse he is given at school, he suggests that it is safer for Lelouch to pretend not to know him. He endures the most awkward knighting ceremony without outwardly flinching. He is seen as a traitor by the Japanese and will never be more than a "former Eleven" to Britannian's. He has to work much harder to prove his worth but does so because to change anything he needs respect and power.
Outside of battle situations Suzaku is polite and reserved but cautiously friendly. He drifts through levels of formality depending on who he is with and how well he knows them. At this canon point, when with friends and off duty he can be relaxed and even silly at times. He dresses up as a cat, teases Lelouch and Shirley. He shows Euphie round the city and is sweet and almost teasing. He is kind to Nunnally and whilst at school he seems to honestly enjoy the time he has to be an ordinary teenage boy with friends.
On the flip side Suzaku can be cruel, he was not instantly nice to Lelouch when they were children though they became friends over the time Lelouch and Nunnally lived with him. Though he is early on in canon he is still someone who goes on to betray Lelouch to the emperor, uses Nunnally as bait and eventually by Zero Requiem will do awful horrific things in order to realise the final goal of saving the world. He is not that person yet, he has not lost Euphemia, has not realised Lelouch is Zero, has not fired F.L.E.I.J.A on Tokyo but the potential for all those acts is within him and so it is part of his personality.
For Suzaku is someone who is more loyal to causes than people and will serve anyone who he believes will allow him to do what is right.
Abilities: Suzaku has no magical or supernatural powers.
Fighting Ability Suzaku is a trained fighter. He is a soldier and is trained in firearms and hand to hand combat. He trained in Kendo until he was ten and has maintained his skills. It is notable that unless ordered he will always try and defend first especially outside of a strict battle situation.
Physical Reactions Suzaku has ridiculous levels of hand eye coordination and reaction time. In later canon a lot of this can be put down to the Live Geass that has been cast on him. However he is able to destroy a camera mounted machine gun with a lag time of 0.05 seconds without being struck once before the Geass is cast on him. He is able to time a jump to cut the wire of a pendulum bomb perfectly. He is very strong and fit.
Knightmare frame piloting He is a skilled pilot. This is helped by his ability to take in a lot of information at once and to act on it. Even when Lelouch has managed to find a pattern to his movement
Intelligence Suzaku is not conveniently intelligent. He does not have a high level of education (there is a gap between when Japan was invaded when he was ten and when he attended Ashford at 17). He is shown to need extra help by Cecile though he is treasurer of the student council which suggests that he is good at maths. He doesn't consider himself particularly smart and indeed seems like one of the less intelligent characters because of how master mind manipulative every one around him is. He does however have good instincts, part of his success at Knightmare piloting comes from being able to understand a lot of information, he is able to work out who Zero is (though he denies it even to himself for a while) and later on in canon he is able to work out what Lelouch will do based on what he knows of him.
Strengths: Determined | Goal-orientated | Cares a lot | Tries to be honourable | Protector
Weaknesses: Self-sacrificing | Lack of self worth | Impulsive | Idealistic | Overly obedient
God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: I think it fits Suzaku's personality better, though he is personally trying to change things he does it through giving his strength to and fighting for others (the Britannian army, Euphemia and later Lelouch)
Cause Of Death: Lots of fire and explosions. It is the canon scene where Lelouch casts the Live Geass onto Suzaku, except for purposes of this app and game Schneizel's attack hits before Lelouch can do so and Suzaku is killed. I've written it out for the convenience of the canon blind.
Scene: Suzaku is sat in a chair facing into what is recognisable as a cockpit of some sort of fighting machine to anyone who has such things in their world. There is a masked figure in a black and purple inside the cockpit, Suzaku has him at gunpoint. Suzaku looks determined, grimly determined but there is fear in his eyes.
"You're going to die with me. Do you really want that?" The masked figure is shouting.
Before Suzaku can answer a voice comes over the radio. "Suzaku Kururugi, your death won't be in vain!" Suzaku looks surprised but his gun doesn't waver. "We have the opportunity to kill Zero, the most wanted traitor in our countries history! They will tell tales of your bravery for years to come."
"Shut up!" That's the masked figure again as he slams his fist on the consol. There is shouting in the background, orders from outside. Gunfire. A higher voice shouting, pleading but the words are mostly lost in the chaos.
Suzaku doesn't move, his arm doesn't waver. "A soldier follows order to the last." It's not clear if he is telling the masked figure, Zero, or reminding himself.
"That's nice and easy isn't it?" Zero again, his voice is mocking but he sounds desperate. "Having someone else give the orders? What about you?"
Suzaku looks shocked for a moment but his eyes narrow as he answers. "No! I decided this for myself..." He breaks off as a shadow passes overhead, darkening the cockpit. More gunfire sounds from outside.
Zero has moved, coming closer to Suzaku. "Suzaku, you're going to die!"
Suzaku focuses back on Zero. "That's better than breaking the rules!"
Molten fire comes down like rain obliterating the area that they are in.
Vessel: A Slash Harken, except a smaller one (to be wielded by a person not a giant robot) so more like a grappling hook attached to a long wire.
Name Location: Left hand
Power: Enhanced Agility- allows the wielder to react quicker in a battle situation able to dodge out of the way of attacks better. As a limit- It would use the wielders own agility as a base and boost it from there, so a very slow character would not become ridiculously fast but would become faster than usual.
